Puppymill Malnurishment

Note the 3rd dog from the left in the above photo , skin and bones.

Something has to be in the puppymill law about properly feeding the mother dogs during pregnancy and nursing. The mills feed the cheapest of the cheap , bottom of the barrel dog food and produce unhealthy puppies. Just because a dog is of good weight does not mean its not malnourished, ALL the dogs I get here are so malnourished I have to build them up for 3 weeks before my Vet will touch them.

Below is a 4 month old American Eskimo puppy , weighs only 4 pounds. Has Demodex mange , his jaw is malformed , his back leg is malformed , and he fractured his front leg by simply playing for the first time in his life. It should NOT have fractured that easily. But he came from a malnourished mother.

Amber Jay - and a big lesson

Amber arrived here on 05/15/2008. She came from a Missouri puppymill , stayed at another rescue for a year. There she stayed in a kennel building and never turned the corner to become friendly to humans. So I was asked to take her, so she could come in the house and learn to trust humans and become a house dog.

I went to Hiawatha Kansas to meet the rescue lady who was bringing me Amber and another peke named Miles. We met at the McDonald's , a frequent meeting spot. Debra opened up the travel crate in which she had Miles and Amber. Did not shut the crate door and turned to hand me Miles. Amber Jay took off like a shot across the parking lot. We herded her for an hour towards each other and did not catch her. She finally went under a car that was parked up against the curb and she only had 3 ways out. And thankfully a nice man in a suit with LONG arms reached under the car and pulled her out.

One must never ever leave a crate door open on a transport of mill dogs. They are terrified of humans and will run like the wind. You will most likely not catch them , they will not come to anyone and they will either starve to death or be ran over in the road.

Puppymill Vets

How can ANY Vet be a Vet for the puppy-mills? They would have to be pretty coldhearted and uncaring.

MOST vets, when you bring in an animal (I don't care what kind) want to DO SOMETHING if that animal has grey and black teeth and bright red gums. The Nebraska State Vet John Boucher thinks this is A-OK and nothing needs be done , after all , its normal for a 5 year old dog to have all its teeth rotted into the jaw bone.

OR, their ears are black, gooey, caked solid with bug shit and they are whining.

OR, the dog is so matted that they can't see, can't stand on their hind legs, can't get a leg around to scratch their sore ears and the fur is tearing the top layer of skin off in red, raw, infected patches....

OR ulcerated eyes bulging and dog cringing.

Or blowing out green runny mucusy poop, or bright or dark red runny poop.

How about the bred females with huge hernias? Imagine trying to carry and squeeze out pups in that condition?

CAN YOU IMAGINE what would happen to a vet's practice if THAT VET were to say "oh, no treatment is needed...the dog is merely uncomfortable".......

Potty training the ex-mill dog

From the moment the dogs arrive here they are treated the same as any "normal dog". They need to move on and leave the abuse behind them. They are cleaned of the stench of the puppymill , taken to the Vet , and a new life begins.

The only exception is for ones like Bubba who sat in a catatonic state for a week.
Way to traumatized to begin any rules. Or thoes that are to sick or weak to begin.
And really even they are told the rules, just not as sternly.

Yes it is possible to house train an ex-mill dog. IF they live in the house with you , if they are put back into kennels and cages , then no they won't get it. They will continue to sleep/eat/poop/pee all in the same spot, just like at the mill.

The first step in potty training is to teaching them what "outside" is , as they have never been there before. My word for going outside is "OUT" , we go OUT alot to get them used to the grass , wind , sun and the outside noises. Once they have been outside in the big yard , they enjoy the freedom so much that they want to go outside.

Treats are ONLY given for potty outside , if they are caught pottying in the house they are told "OUT" and shown the door. And then given a treat or a big hug depending on the dogs preferance for its reward.

Repitition and consistant training is what they need. Their little heads are like a blank slate and are ready to be filled with all the things in life that they have never had.

the laws of the house:
1. potty outside
2. no fighting
3. no biting
4. we have enough food for everyone
5. nothing on the coffee table is yours
6. leave the cat alone
7. the garbage in MINE stay out of it
8. no wresteling on the furniture
9. no marking
10. do not sit in the dog door , go in or out
11. no barking at night

Albert from The Pet Doctor

Meet Albert he arrived here 09/11/09. A family with 6 kids bought him 4 years ago at the Pet Doctor in Lincoln Nebraska. Which means he came from a Maxwell Nebraska puppymill , that is breeding beagles that have Demodex Mange. Demodex or Red mange is passed from the mother to the puppies.

www.thepetcenter.com/exa/dem.html

All dogs have demodex mites on them , when their immune system is poor then the mites take over.

I have been told by the person that owned him , that the breeder is in Ainsworth Nebraska. As soon as he finds the AKC papers , I will post them. And call the breeder to pay his vet bills that I will be inuring.

Mill dogs and ROTTEN Teeth

Every single dog we get out of the puppymills , have the most disgusting teeth known to man kind. Annual teeth cleaning , weather done by a Vet , Vet Tech or the lazy Greeders , it HAS to be written into the law. They do not do it now and will not do it unless teeth are checked. And no you do not have to be a Vet to see and smell rotten teeth.

NASTY teeth are the number one mill dog problem , and it causes many other issues. Quite frankly I do not know how their teeth get so rotten, none of my personal dogs teeth have ever been 1/100000th as bad as that and they do not need or get annual dentals.

Nasty teeth cause many other health issues:
1. heart murmurs

2. kidney failure

3. rot into the jaw bone and it breaks or eats the bone

4. pyometra -- this is a new one I figured out lately with the HIGH incidence of pyo in mill dogs. it goes as follows: female comes into heat , licks herself constantly with that nasty mouth and gets the bacteria in her vagina. The males also have the same nasty mouths and lick there peters constantly, and then bred the female.

What is Pyometra:
www.marvistavet.com/html/body_pyometra.html
HOW DOES THIS INFECTION COME ABOUT?
With each heat cycle, the uterine lining engorges in preparation for pregnancy. Eventually, some tissue engorgement becomes excessive or persistent (a condition called “cystic endometrial hyperplasia”). This lush glandular tissue is ripe for infection (recall that while the inside of the uterus is sterile, the vagina below is normally loaded with bacteria.). Bacteria ascend from the vagina and the uterus becomes infected and ultimately pus filled.

5. nasty infected bites on rescurers. Many of the mill dogs are generaly Feral from lack of socialization and being terrified of people as they are picked up by the scruff of the neck or the hind legs and thrown from cage to cage. As a result some will be bad fear biters and since their teeth are ROTTEN , the bite gets infected.

And another thing is none of these dogs have ever been vacinated. The Ag department says its not their concern to make sure the dogs at the very least are vacinated for rabies.

Life as it should be

I am totally against re-caging or kenneling ex-mill dogs. In doing so they never learn to be house dogs. Are never house broken and are yet again sitting in a cage. Yes its probably a clean cage , and they are fed and seen by the vet. But in my opinion this is not the way to rehabilitate a retired puppymill production line worker. They need to be surrounded by "normal" house events and sounds. They need to learn the dog door and go outside to play and potty and not sit in a wire cage or a concrete kennel.

Miss Mable

Mable is a 200 year old Japanese Chin , she is like the energizer bunny and just keeps going. That is her with her head down in the bottom of the dog waterer. I was filling it up and I guess I was to slow about it.

Mable came here a few years back , she was found as a stray and was severely emaciated. Ever since then she sleeps by the food plate and eats the very second she has room for something in her stomach.

ahhh Chihuahua ?????

One of the new children , whom I was told was going to be a 6 month old Chihuahua... NOT. I do wonder what she is other than a very scared mill baby. I have yet to catch her to see if she is actually a baby or not. The fluff and buff team are coming on Sunday and we will get all the new kids bathed , shaved if needed and toenails cut. So I will have help cornering her then to get her picked up and examined. Next to her is a Japanese Chin baby , 4 months old and sweet as sugar, looks like Marty Feldman.

A glutton for punishment

Yes I am a glutton for punishment. We got in 14 new dogs last night from the mills in Missouri. Nine Chihuahuas , 4 Pekingese and 1 Japanese Chin puppy.

Luckily this is a friendly bunch , although the ride home with them was a nose hair burning experiance. Boy did they REEK , but then I knew that they would. I just did not know what end of the puppymill Stink scale that they would be on. It was the high end... Homer (pictured above) is RIPE not having been groomed in 2 or 3 years , he has urine soaked dreadlocks laced with poop.

The 2 girl Pekes are emaciated , 3 of the chihuahua boys decided to try to kill each other over one of the girl chihuahuas and are now encarserated utill Wednesday night when they go to see Dr. Hack-em-off.

Murphy the $1000.00 and counting, ex-puppy mill dog

06/07/09 Murphy arrived at the sanctuary from the puppy mill. He was cleaned up and carefully examined for anything that may need a Vet visit or tending to. We cleaned his eye up the best we could and then let him eat and rest for the night.

06/08/09 Murphy was taken to the puppy dogtor today. His right eye has a bulge spot in the middle , this is indicative of a prolapsing cornea. And we do not want it to rupture so , we went in as an emergency. Eyes are always an emergency, per the Wizard.

06/11/09 Vet has managed to save Murphy's eye, there was a puncture wound in it. We found he has a fractured jaw and had NASTY teeth which have been pulled out. And he was neutered and tested for heartworms. $285.00

06/19/09 Back to vet to get the stitches out... $58.50

07/10/09 My husband called me to say he thought Murphy was dead. I went and picked him up and he was not dead , just very very weak. I rushed him in to the Vet , his tongue and gums were pale. He was FULL of hook worms and whip worms. Even after having been wormed by us. When the load is that bad it takes 2 or 3 rounds to get rid of them. And 2 weeks for the intestinal tract to heal from the hooks , hook worms hook into the intestines and suck blood. His hemogloben was low and is why his tongue and gums were pale and cold to the touch. $240.50

07/12/09 Murphy went to stay with one of my Volunteers to have some peace and quite and gain his strenght. She noted that his front leg was swollen and he was not using it. So she took him to the Vet. $75.00

08/07/09 Murphy once again to the Vet because his eye was just not staying lubed , no matter how much salve was slathered on. He could not shut his eye all the way because his eye was elongated with genetic glaucoma and once again had red tinged green gack in his eye. $75.00

08/09/09 Volunteer brings Murphy back , so we can have his eye removed. He is strong enough now to go ahead and do it, he can't see so we will relieve his pain perminantly.

08/10/09 We are being force to have Murphy's eye removed. Its grown oblong like he has bad glaucoma and he can't close it all the way so it dries out badly no matter how much medication I put in it. He can't see , so this will relieve him of the pain of very dry eyes. The surgery is scheduled for Thursday 08/12.

08/14/09 - Murphy is home from the Vet now $246.50 , he will go back in 2 weeks to get the stitches out... more $$$

09/01/09 - Murphy has had his stitches out and is doing great at fattening up.

Blind dogs

I cannot see you Mommy, when you cuddle me so near.
And yet I know you love me, it's in the words I hear.
I cannot see you Daddy, when you hold me by your side
But still I know you love me when you tell me so with pride.
I cannot see to run and play out in the sun so bright
For here inside my tiny head it's always dark as night.
I cannot see the treats you give when I am extra good
But I can wag my tail in Thanks just like a good dog should.
"She cannot see. The dogs no good" is what some folks might say
"She can't be trained, she'll never learn She must be put away."
But not you, Mom and Daddy You know that it's alright
Because I love you just as much as any dog with sight.
You took me in, you gave me love and we will never part
Because I'm blind with just my eyes, I see you in my heart. ---

3am Wake up call by the heathens

The ungrateful heathens started barking at something this morning at 3am. Of course I got out of bed to hush them up and tried to go back to bed. But they started again , so I just got up. So its now 4:30 AM and of course they are all now passed back out again.
